Average MCAT score

AAMC reports a mean total of 500.6 for all 305,494 exams given in 2023, 2024 and 2025, retakes included. That sits near 500, the center of the 472–528 total scale.

Good to know

  • What the percentile counts: Scores at or below yours, the same as ACT, ASVAB, ISEE, SAT and SSAT.
  • All four sections share one 118–132 scale centered at 125, and the total is a plain sum, so 125 in every section is exactly 500, the center of the 472–528 total scale. Because the scales match, you can compare your sections with each other directly.
  • AAMC prints a confidence band with every score: plus or minus 2 points on the total and 1 point on each section. A 500 total is printed with 498 to 502, so totals only a point or two apart overlap.

Common questions

How is the MCAT scored?

Your raw score in each section is the number of questions you answer correctly, with no penalty for guessing, and AAMC converts it to a 118–132 scaled score by equating. The four section scores are added for a total from 472 to 528.

How to calculate MCAT score

Add your four section scores, each from 118 to 132. AAMC's example report shows 124 + 123 + 127 + 127 = 501.

Is a 510 a good MCAT score?

On AAMC's percentile ranks in effect May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, a 510 total is the 79th percentile: 79% of total scores from the 2023–2025 testing years were at or below 510. AAMC reports a mean total of 500.6 for those exams.

What is the middle of the MCAT score scale?

The total scale is centered at 500 and each section at 125, so 125 in every section is exactly 500.

When do MCAT percentile ranks change?

AAMC updates them every May 1.

How it works

AAMC scores each of the four sections from 118 to 132 and adds them for a total from 472 to 528. Every score is printed with a confidence band and a percentile rank from the table in effect May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027.

Total = Chemical and Physical + CARS + Biological and Biochemical + Psychological and Social

  1. Enter your four scaled section scores (118–132).
  2. Add them to get your total (472–528).
  3. Add and subtract 2 from the total, and 1 from each section score, for the confidence bands.
  4. Look up each score in AAMC's percentile ranks, built from the 2023–2025 scores.

AAMC's example score report (Figure 2 of its 2027 MCAT data guide)

  • Chemical and Physical 124, CARS 123, Biological and Biochemical 127, Psychological and Social 127
  • Total: 124 + 123 + 127 + 127 = 501
  • Confidence band: 501 ± 2 = 499 to 503
  • Percentile ranks: total 52; sections 46, 37, 75 and 65

Total 501, with the range 499 to 503 and a percentile rank of 52, all as on AAMC's example report.

What this doesn't account for

  • Converting raw scores: AAMC equates each test form, so this page takes scaled scores only.
  • What AAMC prints as the range around a score at the very top or bottom of the scale; this page keeps that range within 118–132 and 472–528.
  • Percentile ranks after April 30, 2027, when AAMC's next table takes effect.
