130–170

130–170

0.0–6.0, steps of 0.5

ETS reports no combined GRE score and says the measures should not be compared directly, because each is scaled separately. Compare them by percentile rank instead.

ETS publishes no percentile for a few of the lowest scores (Verbal 130, Quantitative 130–132, Analytical Writing 0 and 0.5); the table shows “Not published” for those.

Average GRE score on each measure

ETS reports mean scores of 151.39 in Verbal Reasoning, 157.62 in Quantitative Reasoning and 3.46 in Analytical Writing for test takers from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. ETS reports each measure on its own and defines no total score.

Good to know

  • What the percentile counts: Scores below yours, the same as LSAT.
  • The same number ranks very differently on the two measures: a 165 is the 95th percentile in Verbal Reasoning but only the 67th in Quantitative Reasoning (test takers from July 2022 to June 2025), because ETS scales each measure separately.
  • Your Verbal or Quantitative score is not just a count of right answers: the second section of each measure is harder or easier depending on how you did on the first, and ETS's equating allows for that, so no fixed raw-score chart fits your test.

Common questions

How is the GRE scored?

Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in one-point steps, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half points; there is no total. Verbal and Quantitative are section-level adaptive, and ETS equates raw scores to allow for that and for small differences between test editions.

What is a good GRE score?

ETS's data for test takers from July 2022 to June 2025 puts a 160 at the 82nd percentile in Verbal Reasoning but the 50th in Quantitative Reasoning, and a 4.0 at the 63rd in Analytical Writing. The mean scores were 151.39 in Verbal, 157.62 in Quantitative and 3.46 in Writing.

Is the GRE scored out of 340?

No. ETS reports Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning separately, each from 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6. It defines no combined score and publishes no percentile for one, and it says the measures should not be compared directly, because each is scaled separately.

What does NS mean on a GRE score report?

NS (No Score) is reported if you answer no question in a measure.

GRE scores explained: three measures, no total

ETS scores Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning from 130 to 170 in one-point steps, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half points. There is no total. Each score's percentile rank is the percent of test takers from July 2022 to June 2025 who scored lower.

Percentile rank = ETS's table value for each measure (the percent who scored lower)

  1. Enter your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores (130–170) and your Analytical Writing score (0–6).
  2. Look up each score in ETS's 2026–27 interpretive data (Tables 1B and 1C).
  3. Read each rank as the percent of test takers who scored lower than you on that measure.

From ETS's GRE General Test Interpretive Data (Tables 1B and 1C)

  • Verbal Reasoning 165 → 95
  • Quantitative Reasoning 165 → 67
  • Analytical Writing 4.0 → 63

The same 165 is the 95th percentile in Verbal Reasoning but the 67th in Quantitative Reasoning.

What this doesn't account for

  • A combined Verbal plus Quantitative score: ETS defines none.
  • Converting raw scores: ETS equates them, allowing for the adaptive second section.
  • Scores ETS leaves blank in its tables, which show here as not published.
