Your undergraduate courses (list every attempt)

AMCAS counts every attempt at a repeated course, including original grades your school forgave or replaced. A WF (withdrawal while failing) is 0.0 only where your school counts it as an F; a plain W is left out.

BCPM is biology, chemistry, physics and math only. Natural and physical sciences such as geology or environmental science go in AO.

Graduate courses get their own AMCAS GPA, so leave them out here.

Quarter hours are estimated with the table in AAMC's Grade Conversion Guide (two-thirds, to one decimal). AMCAS itself uses your school's own conversion.

Good to know

  • Repeated courses: Every attempt counts, the same as CASPA GPA and LSAC GPA.
  • BCPM covers biology, chemistry, physics and math only, classified by the course's main content rather than the department. Courses AMCAS files under natural and physical sciences, such as geology or environmental science, count in AO.
  • If your school's forgiveness policy replaced an old grade, you still enter the original grade and credits: AMCAS counts every attempt, and leaving the original out can get the application returned.

Common questions

How does AMCAS calculate GPA?

AMCAS multiplies each grade's weight (A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7 down to F 0.0) by the course's semester hours, adds the results and divides by the total semester hours. It does this for all courses (total GPA), for biology, chemistry, physics and math (BCPM) and for all other courses (AO).

How does AMCAS decide which courses count as BCPM?

By the course's main content, not the department that offers it: biology, chemistry, physics and math courses are BCPM. Natural and physical sciences courses, such as geology, go in the AO GPA.

Does AMCAS count repeated courses?

Yes. The grade from each time you took the course counts, whatever your school's own repeat policy, and you enter the original grade even when the school replaced it.

How does AMCAS treat an A+?

AMCAS gives an A+ the same weight as an A: 4.0.

Do pass/fail courses count in the AMCAS GPA?

No. Pass/fail courses, passed or failed, go into supplemental hours instead of the GPA.

How does AMCAS convert quarter hours?

With the conversion your school provides: you enter the hours your transcript shows, and AMCAS converts them. To estimate, AAMC's Grade Conversion Guide uses two-thirds, to one decimal, so 4 quarter hours are about 2.7 semester hours.

How the BCPM GPA calculator sorts your courses

Every course counts in the total GPA. Its AMCAS classification, set by the course's main content rather than its department, decides whether it also counts in BCPM or AO.

How it works

AMCAS converts each grade to its weight (A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7 … F = 0.0), multiplies by semester hours to get quality points, and divides by total semester hours. It reports a total GPA plus separate BCPM and AO GPAs.

AMCAS GPA = sum of (AMCAS weight × semester hours) ÷ total semester hours

  1. Convert each grade: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0 … D- 0.7, F 0.0 (AB 3.5, BC 2.5, CD 1.5, DE 0.5 at half-step schools).
  2. Estimate semester hours from quarter hours with the table in AAMC's Grade Conversion Guide (two-thirds, to one decimal: 4 quarter hours = 2.7). AMCAS itself uses your school's own conversion.
  3. Multiply weight × semester hours for each course, counting every attempt of a repeated course.
  4. Leave out pass/fail courses, withdrawals and AP or CLEP credit.
  5. Divide total quality points by total semester hours for all courses (total), for biology, chemistry, physics and math (BCPM) and for all other courses (AO).

Example using AMCAS weights

  • General Chemistry, A-, 4 hours: 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 (BCPM)
  • Biology, B+, 4 hours: 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 (BCPM)
  • English Composition, A, 3 hours: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 (AO)
  • Total 40.0 ÷ 11 = 3.636; BCPM 28.0 ÷ 8 = 3.50; AO 12.0 ÷ 3 = 4.00

AMCAS total GPA = 3.64 (BCPM 3.50, AO 4.00)

What this medical school GPA calculator doesn't account for

  • Your school's own grade conversion, which AMCAS applies during verification.
  • Year-by-year (academic status) and graduate GPAs.
  • Course classification changes AMCAS makes during verification.
