What do you have?
Letter scale · Example default: Florida's state grading scale (grades 6 to 12). Your school's scale may differ, so you can change it.

Each letter starts at its lowest percent and runs up to the next letter. Percents are not rounded first, so 89.9 is still below 90.

Good to know

  • Check your school's own cutoffs before you trust a letter. This page's default scale makes 60–69% a D, but College Board's conversion chart starts D at 66%, so a 62% is a D on one scale and an F on the other.
  • A blank in an online gradebook is not always a zero. In Sakai's percentage gradebook, an ungraded item is left out and its points come off the total possible, so your percent can drop once that item is graded.

Common questions

How to calculate grade percentage from points

Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. For example, 72 out of 80 is 0.90, or 90%. See the weighted grade calculator.

What percentage is an A?

On this calculator's default scale, Florida's state grading scale, an A is 90 to 100%, a B 80 to 89%, a C 70 to 79%, a D 60 to 69% and an F 0 to 59%. Schools set their own cutoffs, so check yours and change the scale in the form. See the high school GPA calculator for College Board's 4.0 scale, where a D starts at 66%.

Source: The Florida Legislature

Is a 65 a D or an F?

It depends on the scale. On the default scale a 65 is a D (60 to 69%). College Board's 4.0 conversion chart starts D at 66% and lists E/F below 65%, so 65 falls in neither of its rows; the high school GPA calculator, which uses that chart, counts 65% as an F.

How do I grade a test by the number wrong?

Count the questions right (the number of questions minus the number wrong), then use the usual rule: divide by the number of questions and multiply by 100. The grading table lists every possible number wrong for tests of up to 100 questions.

How the assignment grade calculator finds your percentage

Divide the points earned by the points possible, multiply by 100, then find the band the percent falls in on the letter scale.

percent = points earned ÷ points possible × 100

  1. If you know the number wrong, subtract it from the number of questions to get the number right.
  2. Divide points earned by points possible.
  3. Multiply by 100 to get the percent.
  4. Find the letter whose lowest percent is at or below yours. On the default scale: A from 90, B from 80, C from 70, D from 60, F below 60.

Sakai's worked example: 72 of 80 points

  • 72 ÷ 80 = 0.90
  • 0.90 × 100 = 90%
  • 90% is at the bottom of the default scale's A range (90–100)

90%, an A

What this doesn't account for

  • Your school's own letter scale (edit it in the form)
  • A rounding rule such as counting 89.5% as 90%: the calculator doesn't round
  • Plus and minus grades, unless you add them to the scale
  • Weighted categories, where some work counts more than other work
