High School GPA Calculator
This high school GPA calculator averages your class grade points on the common 4.0 scale: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0.
5 classes = 3.40 unweighted GPA (4.0 scale)
3.40
17 grade points ÷ 5 credits

The points start on College Board's common 4.0 chart. Your school's scale may differ: open “Your school's scale” to change any letter's points or percentage.
Percentage to GPA uses each letter's lowest percentage, so 89.5% counts as a B until you change the scale.

Good to know
- College Board's 4.0 chart is one common system, not a rule. If your school starts an A at a different percentage or gives a letter other points, change that letter under “Your school's scale” before you trust the result. The chart has no plus or minus grades.
- Enter classes the way your transcript lists them: if it gives a grade for each semester, add each semester as its own class, with the credits printed beside each grade.
Common questions
How to find GPA from your class grades
Turn each class grade into points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), add them up and divide by the number of classes. Five classes graded B, A, A, C and B average 3.2.
Source: College Board
What is the average high school GPA?
In the National Center for Education Statistics' High School Transcript Study, 2019 graduates had an average overall GPA of 3.11, up from 3.00 in 2009. Those GPAs use A = 4 to F = 0 and add nothing for AP, IB or honors classes.
How to calculate unweighted GPA
Give every class its plain 4.0-scale points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), with nothing extra for honors, AP or IB, and average them. That is the GPA this calculator shows, and the kind the national transcript study reports.

How to calculate GPA from percentage grades
Find the band each percentage falls in on College Board's chart (A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 66–69, F below 65), use that letter's points and average them. The chart skips 65, so this calculator counts 65 as an F, and a percentage between bands, such as 89.5, stays in the lower band. See the grade percentage calculator.

How to calculate GPA with credits
Multiply each class's grade points by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits attempted, which is how NCES's transcript studies work out GPA. With 1 credit for every class the result equals a plain average.
Sources: National Center for Education Statistics, College Board
How do I work out my cumulative GPA?
College Board gives no separate rule for this; it is plain arithmetic on the same average. Multiply your current GPA by the credits it covers, add this term's grade points, and divide by all the credits together.

Do honors or AP classes count extra on a 4.0 scale?
Not on this unweighted scale. Some schools use a weighted GPA instead, where AP and honors classes get higher GPA points; the weighted GPA page also covers how colleges may recalculate a GPA. See the weighted GPA calculator.

The 4.0 GPA scale
Typical conversion; your school may differ: points follow Ohio's alternative-pathway chart, one state's example (a plus or minus moves a letter by 0.3), and percentages are College Board's bands for A to F, so a plus or minus shows its letter's band as an estimate. The calculator above takes whole letters only.

How it works
Each class grade becomes GPA points on College Board's 4.0 chart (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), and your GPA is the average of those points. With 1 credit per class it is a plain average, as in College Board's example; enter credits if your classes count differently.
GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits
- Turn each grade into points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
- Multiply each class's points by its credits (use 1 for every class if they all count the same).
- Add the results and divide by the total credits.
- Cumulative GPA: multiply your current GPA by the credits it covers, add this term's points, and divide by all the credits together.
- For a percentage, find the band it falls in (A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 66–69, F below 65) and use that letter's points.
- College Board's chart leaves 65 out (D is 66–69, F is below 65); this calculator counts 65.0–65.99 as an F.
Example: five classes, one credit each
- Grades B, A, A, C, B: 3 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 3 = 16 grade points
- 16 grade points ÷ 5 classes = 3.2
GPA = 3.20
Related: weighted GPA calculator
What this doesn't account for
- Plus and minus grades and your school's rounding rule: the scale editor changes only the points and percentage cutoffs for A to F.
- Extra points for honors or AP classes (that is a weighted GPA).
