This page can't turn right and wrong answers into scaled scores: E3n, the non-profit that runs the SSAT, adjusts scores for small differences between test forms and doesn't publish the conversion. Pick your level, then enter the three scaled scores from your score report to check its total.

E3n does not publish its percentile tables (they compare you with first-time test takers in your grade over the last three years), so no percentile is shown.

What the SSAT score report shows

For the total and for each of Verbal, Quantitative and Reading, the report gives your scaled score, your percentile and the average score for your grade. Each section also shows a range you would likely score within if you retested soon, and how many questions you got right, got wrong or left unanswered.

Good to know

  • Official percentile table published: No public table: each percentile appears only on the score report. Of the 9 tests on this site, only SSAT, ISEE and SHSAT say no.
  • What the percentile counts: Scores at or below yours, the same as ACT, ASVAB, ISEE, MCAT and SAT.
  • Guessing costs points on the Middle and Upper SSAT but not on the Elementary SSAT. A wrong answer takes off a quarter point, so four wrong answers cancel one right one: skip a question unless you can rule out some choices. On the Elementary test, answer everything.
  • Your SSAT percentile depends on the grade entered at registration. You're compared with first-time test takers in that grade over the last three years, so entering the wrong grade shifts every percentile.

Common questions

How is the SSAT total score calculated?

Add your Verbal, Quantitative and Reading scaled scores. E3n's sample Upper Level report shows 800 + 755 + 800 = 2355.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the SSAT?

At the Middle and Upper Levels, yes: a quarter point comes off for each wrong answer, and a skipped question costs nothing. The Elementary Level has no penalty for wrong answers.

How do you work out an SSAT raw score?

At the Middle and Upper Levels: one point per right answer, minus a quarter point per wrong answer, rounded to the nearest whole number. E3n's example: 32 right and 19 wrong gives 27¼, which rounds to 27.

Does the SSAT superscore?

No. E3n reports each sitting as a whole and doesn't combine your best section scores from different test dates.

Does an SSAT scaled score mean the same from year to year?

Yes. E3n says a scaled score today means the same as it did 15 years ago, and it equates every test form so scores stay comparable from one form to the next.

SSAT scoring, from right and wrong answers to the total

Your score report gives a scaled score for Verbal, Quantitative and Reading on your level's scale, and the total is the three added. At the Middle and Upper Levels a section's raw score is 1 point per right answer minus a quarter point per wrong answer; E3n then equates it to the scaled score, a step it does not publish.

Total = Verbal + Quantitative + Reading (scaled scores)

  1. Pick your level: Upper (grades 8–11), Middle (5–7) or Elementary (3–4).
  2. Enter the three scaled section scores printed on your score report.
  3. Add them, and check the sum against the total on the report (Upper 1500–2400, Middle 1320–2130, Elementary 900–1800).
  4. For reference, E3n's raw score is right answers minus a quarter point per wrong answer (Middle and Upper), but only E3n can turn it into a scaled score.

E3n's sample Upper Level score report

  • Verbal 800, Quantitative 755, Reading 800
  • Total: 800 + 755 + 800 = 2355
  • E3n's raw-score example: 32 right and 19 wrong → 32 − 19 ÷ 4 = 27¼ → rounded to 27

A total of 2355 out of 2400, as printed on E3n's sample report.

What this doesn't account for

  • Turning right and wrong answers into scaled scores: E3n equates each test form and doesn't publish the conversion.
  • Percentiles: E3n doesn't publish its tables.
  • The writing sample and experimental section, which are not scored.
