ISEE Score Calculator
This ISEE score calculator checks each stanine on your report against the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) chart, but it can't work out percentile ranks.
Verbal percentile 70, Quantitative percentile 45, Reading percentile 65, Math percentile 80 → stanines Verbal 6, Quantitative 5, Reading 6, Math 7
Verbal 6, Quantitative 5, Reading 6, Math 7
The stanine your report shows for each percentile rank, from ERB's stanine chart: 1–3 below average, 4–6 average, 7–9 above average.

Good to know
- Official percentile table published: No public table: each percentile appears only on the student's score report. Of the 9 tests on this site, only ISEE, SHSAT and SSAT say no.
- What the percentile counts: Scores at or below yours, the same as ACT, ASVAB, MCAT, SAT and SSAT.
- Don't add your ISEE section scores together: each of the four sections gets its own 760–940 scaled score, percentile and stanine, and schools read them as a profile.
- A low-looking ISEE percentile isn't what it seems. You're compared only with students who took the ISEE in the past three years to apply to the same grade (ERB's Guidelines for the Use of Scores), and ERB's 2021 What to Expect guide says that makes ISEE percentile ranks generally 10 to 40 points lower than on tests with national norms.
Common questions
What is a stanine?
A stanine is a score from 1 to 9, with 5 as the midpoint, made by dividing all students' scores into nine groups of different sizes. E3n says ISEE stanines 4, 5 and 6 cover the middle 54 percentile points, and stanines 1–3 and 7–9 the bottom and top 23.
What is the average ISEE score?
ERB publishes no current average scaled score; on its stanine scale, 4–6 is average, 1–3 below average and 7–9 above average, and stanine 5, the midpoint, covers percentile ranks 40–59. The latest typical scores ERB printed are 2018–2019 quartiles by grade, in its 2021 Upper Level What to Expect guide.

Who are you compared with on the ISEE?
Other students who took the ISEE for the same grade over the past three years. E3n compiles these norms again every year.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the ISEE?
No. An ISEE score counts only the questions answered correctly, and under ERB's guidelines a wrong answer costs nothing.

ISEE stanine scores by percentile rank
Each row is one stanine on ERB's chart: the percentile ranks it covers and ERB's own description. The analysis band is the stanine plus or minus 1, kept within 1 to 9, as the calculator shows it.
| Stanine | Percentile ranks | ERB's description | Analysis band (±1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stanine 1 | 1–3 | Below average | 1–2 |
| Stanine 2 | 4–10 | Below average | 1–3 |

ISEE scoring: scaled scores, percentile ranks and stanines
Your ISEE score report gives each of the four scored sections a 760–940 scaled score, a percentile rank against applicants to the same grade over the past three years, and a stanine from 1 to 9, with a shaded band one stanine either side. ERB's stanine chart is how the percentile becomes the stanine, so this page can check both from the percentile rank.
Stanine = ERB band for the percentile (1–3 → 1, 4–10 → 2, 11–22 → 3, 23–39 → 4, 40–59 → 5, 60–76 → 6, 77–88 → 7, 89–95 → 8, 96–99 → 9); analysis band = stanine ± 1
- Find each section's percentile rank and stanine on the score report.
- Look the percentile rank up in ERB's stanine table: the stanine should match the report's.
- Add and subtract 1 for the stanine analysis band, kept within 1 to 9.
- Read the four sections separately.
E3n's two score report examples
- E3n's percentile example: a percentile rank of 70 in Mathematics Achievement (E3n gives no stanine for it)
- Our lookup in ERB's stanine chart: 70 is in the 60–76 row, so stanine 6
- E3n's band example: a stanine of 5 shows an analysis band from 4 to 6
Stanine 6 for the 70th percentile (our chart lookup), and a 4–6 band for a stanine of 5 (E3n's own example).

What this doesn't account for
- Turning raw or scaled scores into percentiles: E3n's per-form conversions and norms are not published.
- The Primary levels (applying to grades 2–4).
- The essay, which is sent to schools unscored.
