Good to know
- What the percentile counts: Scores at or below yours, the same as ACT, ASVAB, ISEE, MCAT and SSAT.
- College Board publishes two percentile sets, and they disagree. This page uses the user group percentiles (actual SAT takers). For totals from 990 to 1550 the nationally representative percentile is higher, and from 500 to 960 it is lower: a 1200 is the 75th user percentile but the 81st nationally representative.
- Your total is simply your two section scores added, so there is no rounding step. A raw-score chart cannot predict it: the digital SAT picks an easier or harder second module from how you did on the first, and scoring weighs question difficulty.
Common questions
How is the SAT scored?
College Board scores the Reading and Writing and Math sections from 200 to 800 each, in steps of 10, and adds them for a total from 400 to 1600. The test is multistage adaptive: your second module in each section is easier or harder depending on the first, and your score depends on which questions you get right and how hard they are.
How to calculate SAT score
Add your Reading and Writing and Math section scores: College Board's sample report shows 620 + 500 = 1120. College Board publishes no chart that turns correct answers into section scores for the digital SAT, so a total can only be worked out from the section scores on your report.
Is a 1200 a good SAT score?
On College Board's user group percentiles, as checked on October 19, 2026 (College Board prints no edition year), a 1200 total is the 75th percentile: 75% of SAT takers who graduated in the past three school years scored 1200 or lower. College Board's 2026 annual report gives a mean total of 1045 for the class of 2026.

How it works
College Board reports two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each from 200 to 800. The total is their sum, from 400 to 1600. Each score is then found in College Board's user group percentiles.
Total = Reading and Writing + Math
- Enter your Reading and Writing and Math section scores (200–800, in steps of 10).
- Add the two section scores to get the total (400–1600).
- Look up the total and each section score in College Board's user group percentiles: the percent of recent SAT takers who scored the same or lower.
The scores on the sample score report in College Board's Fall 2026 SAT Weekend Understanding Scores guide
- Reading and Writing 620
- Math 500
- Total: 620 + 500 = 1120
- User group percentile for a 1120 total: 65
Total 1120, the same as the sample report. The sample report's percentiles are illustrative: on College Board's user group table, a 1120 is the 65th percentile.

What this doesn't account for
- Turning correct answers into section scores: the digital SAT adapts, and scoring weighs question difficulty.
- The nationally representative percentiles, which College Board publishes as a separate set.
