ASVAB Score Calculator
This ASVAB score calculator turns 2 × Verbal (VE) + Arithmetic Reasoning + Mathematics Knowledge into your Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) percentile.
VE 50, AR 50, MK 50 → AFQT composite 200 → 48th percentile
48th percentile
48% of the 1997 national sample of 18- to 23-year-olds had an AFQT composite at or below 200.

Average ASVAB score on each test and on the AFQT
Each ASVAB test is scaled so the 1997 national sample averages a standard score of 50, with a standard deviation of 10, and the AFQT percentile scale was built to average about 50. Scoring exactly 50 on VE, AR and MK gives an AFQT composite of 200, the 48th percentile on Table 2.5.

Good to know
- What the percentile counts: Scores at or below yours, the same as ACT, ISEE, MCAT, SAT and SSAT.
- Verbal counts double in the AFQT. The composite is 2 × VE + AR + MK, so a point of Verbal (built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension) moves the AFQT twice as much as a point of Arithmetic Reasoning or Mathematics Knowledge.
- Running out of time works differently by version. On the computer ASVAB, questions left at the time limit are scored as if you guessed at random, so keep working properly; on the paper version there is no guessing penalty, so fill in every answer.
Common questions
What are the ASVAB sections?
The ASVAB has 10 tests in four areas (verbal, math, science and technical, and spatial); the table of the 10 tests below gives each one's length and time limit. Four of them make up the AFQT: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge.
How is the ASVAB scored?
Each test is scored with item response theory, equated for every test form and reported as a standard score on the 1997 scale. Four of those standard scores then make the AFQT composite, which is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99.

How to calculate ASVAB score by hand: the AFQT
Double your Verbal (VE) standard score, add Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mathematics Knowledge (MK), then find that composite in Table 2.5 of the 1997 score scale. For example, 60 on each gives 2 × 60 + 60 + 60 = 240, the 87th percentile.

Who is the AFQT percentile compared with?
A national sample of 18- to 23-year-olds who took the ASVAB in 1997; those norms have been in use since 2004. A Defense Department note posted in 2026 says that 1997 group still represents today's test takers.

Can VE be worked out from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension?
Not exactly. VE is computed from both before rounding, with Paragraph Comprehension counting about two-thirds as much, so use the VE printed on your score report.

How ASVAB scores work: standard scores and the AFQT
The ASVAB's ten tests are reported as standard scores (Auto Information and Shop Information together, as one AS score), set so the 1997 national sample averages 50 with a standard deviation of 10. The AFQT uses four of those tests. Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension are combined into a Verbal score (VE), which counts twice; Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge count once each. The Defense Department's 1997 score-scale table turns that composite into a percentile from 1 to 99.
AFQT composite = 2 × VE + AR + MK; AFQT percentile = the Table 2.5 value for that composite
- Find your VE, AR and MK standard scores on your ASVAB score report.
- Double VE and add AR and MK: that is the AFQT composite.
- Look the composite up in Table 2.5 of the 1997 ASVAB score scale report: 109 or less is the 1st percentile, 269 or more the 99th.
- The percentile is the share of the 1997 national sample of 18- to 23-year-olds who scored at or below that composite.
Checked against Table 2.5 of the 1997 ASVAB score scale report
- VE 45, AR 55, MK 60 (made-up standard scores)
- Composite: 2 × 45 + 55 + 60 = 205
- Table 2.5: a composite of 205 is the 53rd percentile
An AFQT percentile of 53, read straight from the 205 row of Table 2.5.
What this doesn't account for
- AFQT categories, and anything about military entry or jobs.
- Turning right answers into standard scores: each test is scored with item response theory.
- Rebuilding VE from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension.
