Illinois districts may let a child start before the cutoff after a readiness assessment.

Birth date

On time = the first fall the cutoff allows. For one repeated or skipped grade, pick late or early: it shifts every year by one, so it fits the school years after the change.

Your district's cutoff date (optional)

The child must be 5 on or before this date. Leave the month on “Use the state's date” unless your district sets its own. A January to March date counts as the January to March after school starts.

This is the grade for an on-time start under the state's cutoff, or a year later or earlier if you pick that. Where we have a dated record of a state's older rule, the calculator uses the rule in force in the kindergarten year; otherwise it uses today's cutoff and the result says so. Cutoffs change and each district places its own students, so a school record can differ. If your state used another date back then, enter it above.

Good to know

  • Age alone does not settle the grade. In the Census Bureau's October 2024 counts, 62.5% of enrolled 17-year-olds were in 12th grade and 27.0% were in 11th (our arithmetic from its table); which one depends on where the birthday falls against the cutoff.
  • The cutoff that counts is the one in force the year kindergarten started. West Virginia moved from before September 1 to before July 1 for kindergarten in 2019–20, and Connecticut from January 1 to September 1 in 2024–25; this calculator applies both. Where no change is recorded it uses today's date and says so in the result, so if kindergarten started before a change you know about, enter the old date.

Common questions

How do I figure out what grade I was in?

Find the fall you started kindergarten (the first fall whose cutoff came on or after your 5th birthday), then subtract that year from the school year's fall year: 0 is kindergarten and 12 is 12th grade. Born April 12, 1992, in Illinois means kindergarten in 1997 and 4th grade in 2001–02.

Source: Illinois General Assembly

What year did I graduate high school?

Add 13 to the fall year you started kindergarten: kindergarten in fall 1997 means 12th grade in 2009–10 and the Class of 2010. One repeated or skipped grade moves that year by one, so pick late or early in the calculator. See the graduation calculator by birthday.

How old are kids in each grade?

Most states set the kindergarten entrance age at 5 by the cutoff date, and Minnesota's law, for example, sets 1st grade at 6 by September 1. With 12 grades after kindergarten (the Census grade levels), 12th grade typically comes at 17 on the cutoff. In the Census Bureau's October 2024 counts, 62.5% of enrolled 17-year-olds were in 12th grade and 27.0% were in 11th (our arithmetic from its table).

Why might my grade differ from the calculator's answer?

The calculator shows the grade for an on-time start under the state's cutoff. A district's own cutoff or a cutoff that has changed (West Virginia's did in 2019) can move it, and so can one repeated or skipped grade: pick late or early, which shifts every year by one and so fits the school years after the change.

What does typical grade mean?

On this page it is the grade for an on-time start under your state's cutoff: kindergarten in the first fall you are 5 on or before the cutoff date, then one grade higher each school year. It is not a count of where most children of an age were enrolled.

Age by grade, kindergarten to 12th grade

Typical age runs from one cutoff date to the next: a kindergartner is 5 on the cutoff date and 6 by the next one, and each grade adds a year. Birthdays are for an on-time start in 2026–27 and follow the state picked in the calculator (Illinois, September 1, until you pick another). Each grade uses the cutoff in force in its kindergarten year where the state's law records a change, and today's cutoff otherwise.

Grade by age, 6 to 18

A child's grade depends on whether their birthday falls on or before the cutoff date or after it: a child who is already 10 on the cutoff date is typically in 5th grade, and one who turns 10 after it is typically in 4th grade.

How it works

Work out the fall kindergarten started from the birthday and the state's cutoff date, then count school years: the school year you pick minus the kindergarten year is the grade (0 = kindergarten, 12 = 12th grade).

grade = fall year of the school year − fall year of kindergarten

  1. Find the 5th birthday and compare it with the state's cutoff: on or before means kindergarten that fall, after means the next fall.
  2. Subtract the kindergarten fall year from the fall year of the school year you picked.
  3. 0 is kindergarten, 1 to 12 are 1st to 12th grade; below 0 is before school, above 12 is after graduation.
  4. The graduating class is the spring 12th grade ends: kindergarten fall year + 13.
  5. A repeated or skipped year moves every grade after it by one.

Born April 12, 1992, in Illinois (must be 5 on or before September 1), school year 2001–02

  • 5th birthday: April 12, 1997, on or before September 1, 1997
  • Kindergarten: 1997–98
  • 2001 − 1997 = 4
  • Age on September 1, 2001: 9 (4 + 5)
  • 12th grade: 2009–10, so Class of 2010 (1997 + 13)

4th grade in 2001–02

What this doesn't account for

  • Your actual school record: more than one repeated or skipped grade, the years before a single one (the late or early option shifts every year), or a move between states
  • Older cutoff rules for states without a dated history here (most states use today's date)
  • District cutoff dates that differ from the state's, unless you enter one
  • Year-round calendars and school systems outside the US
